Mileage Update

Current Total Mileage: 4560km

I have put the roof back on, since the rain has returned. I have made a cover to seal the bottom ventilation holes to keep water out, and now it is very nice and dry no matter how much it rains!

I have got to say that I do envy you when we pass each other on King George and it's pouring down rain! Our commutes appear to be reversed, with me heading from Panorama Ridge to White Rock for work and you going the other way. I see you once a week or so, but it's hard to see whether you're waving back.

Based on your last total distance figure, I estimate (very roughly) that you have spent about $2/km that you've travelled. By keeping my junky bike running just well enough to keep me commuting, I have gone 8,400 km in the past 2 1/2 years and have paid about $.15/km ($.07/km if I factor in the gas money I've saved and $.008/km if I factor in car maintenance saved). That extra $1.85/km you're paying is buying you quite a stylish and comfortable ride, however, and it will continue to drop as you amortize the investment in that eye-catching beast! Keep rolling!

Hi Nat,

Nice to hear from you! I always admire you for commuting on a regular bike in all weather, I don't think I could get myself to do it! You're right, it is definitely more expensive than a bike, but if I didn't have the rain and weather protection I likely would not be riding too much :) I hope to keep up riding about 6000km per year, so the cost should drop fairly soon.

Keep up the riding, I'll have to stop sometime if I have some time!

Bernhard
